Dazzled (K)Nights
Vor 10 Jahren kreierte der Künstler Adam Harvey ein Make-up, das Algorithmen austrickst und der automatisierten Gesichtserkennung einen Strich durch die Rechnung macht. Heute ist diese das Vermummungsverbot umgehende »Vermummung« aktueller denn je. Die Maskenbildnerin Martayla Poellinitz sagt: »In der heutigen Zeit, in der ein einfacher Schnappschuss des Gesichts so viele Informationen über dich und andere, mit denen du in Verbindung stehst, preisgeben kann, ist es wichtig, sich so gut zu schützen, wie es geht.« Poellinitz ist schwarz, lebt in den USA und ist aktiv bei »Black Lives Matter«. Schutz ist ihr wesentlich.
Harveys Looks erinnern an Cyberpunk mit ihrer Schminke, die das Gesicht asymmetrisch teilt. Indem signifikante Merkmale des Gesichts verdeckt und Schwerpunkte woanders als an der T-Achse aus Augen, Nase und Mund / Kinnpartie) gesetzt werden, kann der Algorithmus weder saubere Daten sammeln noch Gesichter einwandfrei identifizieren. Es ist noch nicht einmal nötig, das Gesicht flächendeckend zu übermalen – wenige an ungewohnten Stellen geschickt platzierte Highlights in Kombination mit einer optischen Abschwächung von Teilen der T-Achse können schon ausreichen, um die künstliche Intelligenz auf die falsche Fährte zu locken.
Auf juristischer Ebene wird tatsächlich gestritten, ob solche Vermummungstechniken erlaubt sind. Aber wie will man Beauty und Mode in Paragraphen fassen? Ich beobachte die entsprechenden Looks und Experimente schon eine Weile, es gibt viele Bilder und auch Videotutorials dazu. Ich möchte dieses Make-Up nicht nur in seinem Nutzen, sondern auch in seiner mit unseren Sehgewohnheiten brechenden Schönheit thematisieren und über die simple Abbildung und das Lehrstückhafte eines Tutorials hinausgehen.
10 years ago, artist Adam Harvey created make-up that tricks algorithms and thwarts automated facial recognition. Today, this "mummery" that circumvents the ban on mummery is more topical than ever. Make-up artist Martayla Poellinitz says: "In this day and age where a simple snapshot of your face can reveal so much information about you and others you associate with, it's important to protect yourself as much as you can." Poellinitz is black, lives in the US and is active with Black Lives Matter. Protection is essential to her.
Harvey's looks are reminiscent of cyberpunk with her make-up dividing the face asymmetrically. By obscuring significant features of the face and placing focal points somewhere other than the T-axis of eyes, nose and mouth/chin area), the algorithm can neither collect clean data nor identify faces flawlessly. It is not even necessary to paint over the entire face - a few highlights cleverly placed in unusual places in combination with an optical attenuation of parts of the T-axis can already be enough to throw the artificial intelligence off the scent.
On a legal level, there is indeed a dispute as to whether such masking techniques are permitted. But how can you put beauty and fashion into paragraphs?
